Before I got into writing, I had a little experience with acting. I was a film student in college. So it seemed kind of natural to me to use what I'd learned about method acting for writing, though with writing you have to get into the heads of every character, not just the one you're playing.
So, for starters, so glad I signed up! I follow you on twitter and have saved a bunch of your posts. They always give me this crazy excitement and refreshing focus. This particular blog caught my attention almost immediately, because I quickly connected it to “method acting”. I am a writer an actor.
This “method writing” method is something I’ve begun to practice the last two years. There’s a huge story I’m working on with my partner, and it’s basically Game of Thrones inspired. It’s a massive story but we are so proud of it because we love the story we’ve created. This involved my partner and I actually ordering clothing and props to reflect this time period, and we act everything out. We created the story frame of the story this way, and then discovered just how epic the tale felt. It’s honestly a refreshing way to tackle writing this way, because acting wise, it allows me to tap into a lot of emotional points and heightens that part of me. On the writing side, it allows me new and exciting ways to tackle transposing what we created to paper and giving it that same emotional feel.
It’s really sharpened my writing doing this. We don’t go all out medieval like rarely washing or anything dramatic, but small things we can do, we do and it truly helps the entire process!
I would not attempt to method write because I put my characters in some twisted situations that I wouldn't care to experience. I stick to interviewing others, investigating/researching, or previous experience. Those usually do the trick.
